Recaptured radical Rakib dies in \\\'shootout\\\'
Monday, 24 February 2014
JMB operative Rakib Hasan Russell alias Hafez Mahmud, recaptured five hours after snatching of three convicted radicals from a police van killing a cop on Sunday, was killed in a 'shootout' between the outlawed party activists and the law-enforcers at Beltail upazila in Tangail district on Monday. Rakib, 35, was one of three freed after the daring daylight attack on a prison van. In a filmy style hold-up, a group of armed miscreants intercepted the prison van, opened fire on police, killed a constable and snatched the three Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh militants, including two on death row, on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway at Trishal in Mymensingh district on Sunday morning. The van was carrying the militants, including condemned convict Rakib, to a Mymensingh court from high security Kashimpur central jail in Gazipur around 10am. Constable Atikul Islam was shot dead and four other cops were injured by bullets in the deadly attack. Among the freed JMB men, Salahuddin alias Salehin and Rakib were death row convicts while Mizan alias Boma Mizan was sentenced to life imprisonment. Of them Rakib was tracked down by the law-enforcers and recaptured only five hours into the incident, according to private TV channels.
