Recent violence-related cases to be settled within two weeks

Monday, 27 August 2007

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Naim Ahmed Wednesday said 35 cases filed in connection with violence and violation of emergency rules in Dhaka City will be settled within two weeks after investigations, reports UNB.
"We will settle the cases within the shortest possible time," the Commissioner told reporters at the DMP headquarters.
A total of 35 cases were filed in connection with violent incidents occurred in the city during student protests on August 21 and 22.
The unprecedented protests led the government to impose curfew and shut down all universities and colleges in six divisional cities including Dhaka.
About reports of 50,000 to 80,000 people were accused in the cases, the Commissioner said statistically 76,106 people were accused in those cases but the actual figure might not exceed 10,000 since one person is involved in different incidents.
"According to CrPc separate case is filed for each incident. Even same person can be accused in separate cases if he is involved in those incidents," the DMP Commissioner said.
Naim assured that no innocent person would be harassed in connection with the cases. "None will be harassed unnecessarily. Action will be taken after having sufficient evidences," he said.
He said police functions are to identify the accused. " We are trying to find out actual reasons behind the incidents, those were involved and see whether there is any involvement of money behind it.
The Commissioner said that so far 25 people were arrested in connection with the violent incidents in Dhaka city.
In Chittagong, about 1,500 people, including students of colleges and universities, have been sued in a blanket case for violating emergency rule after Wednesday's rampage in Chittagong University (CU) area in a backlash against the Dhaka University (DU) incident.
Second officer of Hathazari thana Anisur Rahman filed the case Sunday afternoon, bringing allegations against the unidentified accused of a "flagrant violation of emergency rules".
In his statement, the second officer said at least 26 police officials and employees were injured that day. Besides, property worth over Tk 2.5 million was damaged due to the violent protests in Arts Building, Commerce Faculty, IT bhaban, CUKSU bhaban, and police camp areas on the CU campus, he alleged.
He also said that police are preparing to file another case in this connection.
A number of students and police were injured in clashes on the campus Wednesday, the first day of indefinite strike called by Sadharan Chhatra-Chhatri Parishad of CU in protest against the incident at DU.
