Reckless car parking and traffic jam
Tuesday, 30 September 2008
DHAKA city has already turned into a city of traffic jam. From morning to midnight, the city streets remain clogged. The posh residential area of Gulshan has also become a busy commercial hub of the city.
Gulshan is gradually losing its residential character. In addition to the offices of various embassies and foreign missions, a number of local and multinational companies, banks, NGOs and government offices are now located at Gulshan. Most of the offices are on the Gulshan Avenue, the main thoroughfare.
There are a number of high rise structures at Gulshan now. But only a few of these buildings have adequate parking facilities. Top bosses and others of these offices keep their cars on the road occupying a lane resulting in serious traffic congestions. From Aarong to Gulshan-2 the main road is seen occupied. Private companies with their head offices at Gulshan-1 have also a number of branch offices, which are scattered in entire Gulshan area. Besides, the mobile companies also have various offices in different corners. As a result, not only the main avenue, all the link roads and lanes are totally occupied by myriads of cars.
As the offices have created the jams, a number of shopping complexes just beside the roads are aggravating the problem. We find the traffic police completely at a loss to control the vehicular traffic, as those keeping the left side of the road occupied are all influential and the so-called enlightened members of this society.
