Reclaim the spirit behind rituals
Sunday, 6 December 2009
It is time for piety in Islamic rituals to be reclaimed. The spirit of sacrifice in the way of Allah, for example, should mean overcoming sinful instincts and habits, greed for unearned wealth and power, and all forms of dishonesty.
It is supposed to make human beings better for themselves and others. When more people would have proper morals, Bangladesh would be a happy abode for all its citizens.
People who sacrifice only to observe a ritual, and show off, should go for soul searching. Politicians need to overcome their ego and lust for power and material gains. Doctors need to sacrifice their lust for money. They should be dutiful towards the patients in the best spirit of their profession. Engineers need to sacrifice their greed to be able to do their work with honesty. Teachers should devote themselves to class room teaching, instead of private coaching for money making.
