Reclamation of lands from the Bay
Thursday, 28 August 2014
Satellite image has shown that water flow of rivers in the country, carrying huge silts, would raise another Bangladesh-size landmass in the Bay of Bengal along the coast. Total area of Bangladesh is about 1,43,998 squire kilometre where 160 million people live now.
In 1971 when Bangladesh emerged as an independent country, its population was about 75 million. Land is very scarce. Over-populated Bangladesh is actively considering to utilise its scarce land prudently to cater to living, growing agriculture items, setting up of industries, developing communication infrastructure, keeping forest, wet lands and so on. It is indeed a positive thinking no doubt.
Simultaneously, we have to reclaim land from the Bay of Bengal where about 200 million metric tons of silt are being deposited every year. Bangladesh needs to take a scientific programme to expedite reclamation of lands from the Bay. No doubt, it is a gigantic work and it needs a huge investment but we have to start now. Time is running out. The over-populated country desperately needs more and more lands to keep pace of development for its people. The government may make a long-term plan to reclaim another Bangladesh from the Bay and implement the plan from now.
