Recruiters asked to refund hapless workers

Migration to Malaysia

FE REPORT | Friday, 5 July 2024

The expatriates' welfare ministry has asked recruitment agencies to return money within 15 days to the aspirant workers who failed to go to Malaysia.
State Minister for Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Shofiqur Rahman Chowdhury said this on Thursday while addressing a meeting held to discuss the Malaysia market situation.
"We've asked the recruiters to return money within 15 days to the workers who failed to go to Malaysia."
The probe report shows that 100 recruiting agencies sent workers to Malaysia. However, they could not send 17,000 workers before the expiry of the deadline, the state minister mentioned.
"We held a discussion with the Bangladesh Association of International Recruiting Agencies (BAIRA) to return the migration cost to the workers," he said.
"I asked to return the money within 15 days. We will take legal action against those who can't pay within this period. None will be spared," Mr Chowdhury said.
All of them have agreed that the money taken from whoever will be refunded within next 15 days subject to proof.
When Malaysia will hire workers in the future, the workers will also be included on the priority list, he also added.
A joint working group meeting with Malaysia will be held at the end of this month that will help to reopen the market, he hoped.
About the investigation committee's report, the state minister also said that the employers in Malaysia also delayed to send demand in some cases.
Malaysia stopped receiving foreign workers, including Bangladeshis, on May 31.
