Redmond lays foundation for Kiwis

CHITTAGONG, Oct 20 (UNB): Riding on Aaron Redmond's maiden unbeaten fifty, New Zealand gave a resolute to chase to their target of 317 in the first Test against Bangladesh scoring 145 for 2 in 64 overs at stumps on the 4th day of the two match BRAC Bank Test Series at the Bir Shreshtho Shaheed Ruhul Amin Stadium here Monday.
Beginning the afternoon session at seven without loss, the two Kiwi openers took the score to 55 before Jamie How was dismissed. How scored 36 runs off 82 balls with five fours and a six before being bowled by Abdur Razzak.
Another opener Aaron Redmond pairing with Jesse Ryder contributed 90 runs in the second wicket stand to take the visitors to a comfortable position, but New Zealand lost Ryder's wicket few minutes before the play was called off for the day.
Ryder scored 38 runs off 101 balls with four fours before being run out by Mashrafe's direct throw from third man area off Shakib Al Hasan delivery, as he tried to take a second run.
Redmond scored career best 62 off 192 balls with eight fours and remained unbeaten with skipper Daniel Vettori (0) as the bails were drawn for the day.
Abdur Razzak took one wicket for 33 runs in 19 overs including six maidens.
Earlier, resuming the 4th day (Monday) with overnight 184 for 8 in 84 overs, Bangladesh scored 242 for all in 107.3 overs setting the target of 317 runs to the Kiwis.
Night watch batsman Mashrafe Mortaza played a splendid innings scoring 44 runs off 87 balls with seven fours before being stumped by wicket keeper Brendon McCullum off Aaron Redmond, while another night watch batsman Abdur Razzak made 18 off 45 balls with two fours before being caught by Ross Taylor off Iain O'Brien.
Pacer Shahadat Hossain was the last batsman to remain unbeaten on 0.
O'Brien, who took one wicket for 25 runs Sunday, grabbed another wicket giving three runs Monday, to finish with 17-7-28-2, while Redmond bagged one wicket for eight runs.
