Reducing dependence of local govt on the central underscored

Speakers at a convention on good governance expressed the view that the dependence of local government on central government should be reduced and this can be done through decentralisation and strengthening of power.
They were addressing a daylong national convention held in the city's BIAM auditorium Sunday. This is the first convention of its kind in the country organised by 27 institutes and organisations.
In his address as the chief guest of the conference Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) Adviser Anwarul Iqbal said, good governance can be established, if educated people take leadership in society. The government officers are the real persons responsible for blocking development of the local government, he opined.
Presided over by eminent human rights activist Hamida Hossein, the member secretary of the convention organising committee and coordinator of governance coalition Mohsin Ali presented the keynote paper.
Azamt Ullah Khan presided over the plenary session while former adviser to the caretaker government Akbar Ali Khan attended as chief guest. Dilara Chowdhury of Jahangir Nagar University and Badiul Alam Majumder, secretary of Sujon attended the programme as special guests. Shahin Anam, Sayed Nurul Alam and faculty of Dhaka University Jarina Rahman Khan took part in the closing session of the convention.
