Reflecting on Islam and the Qur\\\'an

Syed Badrul Haque | Friday, 3 April 2015

It is a pleasure to write this review of an excellent book, Duties of Muslims Reflecting on the Qur'an by Barrister Salahuddin Ahmed, an Islamic scholar of international repute. The author, an advocate of the High Court of Bangladesh in the seventies, is a retired law academic of the University of New South Wales, Australia for 25 years.
This book will be looked upon as an important contribution in the field of Islam and particularly on the significance and primacy of the Qur'an in our daily lives. Going through the book, the readers will realise that the Qur'an is not only a Holy book reading for earning only thawab from Allah. It also helps them to recount their duties placed upon them against their own selves, towards their family members, friends and all others they deal with every day. These duties have been discussed in two chapters under the titles, 'Duties to Self' and 'Duties to Others'. The climax of all duties is certainly 'Duties to Allah' discussed in another chapter. The book covers 288 pages comprising other 10 chapters as follows: 'Supremacy and Majesty of Allah'; 'Man: Humble origin High Status and Limitations; 'Generosity of Allah'; 'Life in this World'; 'Islam'; 'Prophets and Messengers'; 'Qur'an'; 'Muslims and their Relationship with other communities'; 'Resurrection (Qiyamah) and Day of Judgement'; 'Paradise (Jannat) and Hell (Jahannam)'.
The readers will love to read this book to prepare themselves to answer the questions on the Day of Judgement before the Almighty Allah regarding performance of their duties in this short-lived world. I have always enjoyed reading his thought-provoking books. I am confident that this book also will be counted as another illumination for reflecting on Islam and the Qur'an.
Author's following four books 'Guidance from the Qur'an', 'Islam Fundamental Beliefs', 'Allah' and 'Muslims Life in the Present Day World' were published by A S Noordeen, Kuala Lumpur and reprinted by APH Publishing Corporation, New Delhi. The book under review has been published by APH as it also published author's Bangladesh Past and Present which is a full-fledged Google book.  His Islamic Banking Finance and Insurance A Global Overview of over 600 pages, published by Noordeen, went through a reprint. Noordeen also published his Guide for Muslims Indexed to the Qur'an last year. Author's internationally acclaimed Google Book A Dictionary of Muslim Names was published by Hurst of London along with the publishers of New York, India, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. He is a contributor and consultant to the Muslim Names Section of the Dictionary of American Family Names (Oxford).
The style of the book under review, as usual, is superb but simple and easy to grasp. It familiarises the readers with the relevant extracts of verses from the Qur'an with authentic transliteration. It is an elevating read. The price of this beautifully printed hardcover copy is Indian Rs. 1295.
