Regent Group's Shahed jailed for three yrs

A Dhaka court on Monday jailed Regent Group chairman and Regent Hospital owner Md Shahed alias Shahed Karim for three years in a graft case.
Judge Prodip Kumar Roy of the Dhaka Special Judge Court-07 handed down the verdict and also fined the convict Tk 100,000 (Tk 0.1 million) in the case.
Confirming the judgment to the FE, advocate Mahmud Hossain Jahangir said Mr Shahed was awarded three years as per section 26(2) of the Anti-Corruption Act-2004.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case against Mr Shahed for amassing wealth illegally.
However, he was given acquittal in section 27(1) of the law as the prosecution failed to prove the charge against him.
Mr Shahed was brought to court from prison before the verdict was announced. Following the judgment, he was sent back to jail with a conviction warrant.
In a notice on 05 November 2020, the ACC asked Mr Shahed to submit his wealth statement within 21 working days, according to the case documents.
However, he did not submit the statement on time.
Mr Shahed was given another 15 days, but he did not submit the statement in compliance with the ACC notice.
On 01 January 2021, the ACC sued Mr Shahed after launching an enquiry.
On 28 September 2020, he was sentenced to life imprisonment in a case under the Arms Act 1878.
The verdict was announced by the No. 01 Special Tribunal of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge.
On 10 August 2023, the same court set Monday to declare the verdict after the end of arguments done by both the defence and the prosecution.
On 01 March 2021, the ACC lodged the case against Mr Shahed for amassing illegal wealth of Tk 16.9 million (Tk 1.69 crore).
On 06 July 2020, a RAB team arrested eight persons from two hospitals of Regent Group in Uttara and Mirpur for issuing fake corona test results and certificates by using forged serial numbers.
The crime-busters lodged a case against 17, including Mr Shahed, with Uttara West Police Station under sections 269, 406, 417, 465, 468 and 471 of the penal code.
