Friday, 15 October 2010

The regional headquarters of the South Asian Regional Standards Organization (SARSO) will be set up in Dhaka aiming at removing existing technical barriers to the inter-trade among the SAARC countries, reports UNB.
A project in this regard is now at its final stage for formal approval and once the SARSO becomes operational, the inter-trade volume among eight SAARC member countries will significantly be boosted, Industries Minister Dilip Barua said Thursday.
The Industries Minister was speaking as the chief guest at a function held at BSTI marking 41st World Standard Day.
BSTI (Bangladesh Standard and Testing Institution) Director General AK Fazlul Ahad presided over the function addressed by, among others, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal MP, Industries Secretary Masud Siddiqui, FBCCI president AK Azad and Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) president Kazi Farooque.
Barua said that the headquarters of the SARSO would be set up adjacent to BSTI central office in the city and it would help ensure common standard of products.
He said the entire world had turned into a common market in open market economy. "World's poor and rich - both are consumers of this market…a common international standard is urgent to pay importance to consumers desire."
Speakers at the function said public awareness could be key mechanism to prevent the tendency of adulteration and duplication of products.
Only law and realization of penalty can not be a solution to remove this problem, they said.
An agreement in this regard titled 'Establishment of South Asian Regional Standards Organization (SARSO)' was signed on August 3, 2008 at Colombo during fifteenth SAARC summit, BSTI director Dr Syed Humayun Kabir told the news agency.
He said the construction work would start within next three months.
