Registration of middlemen

Monday, 19 October 2020

The expatriates' welfare and overseas employment ministry has taken a move to bring middlemen who are called dalal (broker) under legal coverage for addressing cheating and other issues in the manpower sector. They are an essential part of the export of manpower but not recognised. Such a situation also offered a section of middlemen the scope to charge higher amount or even cheat the overseas jobseekers. So, making them part of the process would help ensure higher transparency.
There are middlemen who play a dominant role in a number of other services in the public sector and some of them have a corrupt nexus with a section of officers. Their livelihoods are illegal in the eyes of law. These days, some affluent and middle class people are hiring lawyers and fixers to get better services from some government offices. Time has come to draw a dividing line between service and illegal activities. Securing better services should not depend on corruption.
