Regulating motorised rickshaws

Monday, 20 November 2023

The streets of Dhaka city are generally dominated by human-driven rickshaws. But for some years, quite a number of motorised rickshaws are also being seen in alleys of the capital. These battery-powered rickshaws can be seen running through the streets of Old Dhaka with speed. Sometimes, they are also seen plying the main roads. If they are hit by any other vehicle or any obstruction, there is every possibility that these types of rickshaws may break apart because of their frail structure.
We do not know whether these motorised rickshaws have been given licences to operate on the streets of Dhaka or not. However, the number of such rickshaws is increasing every day. The authorities concerned should adopt a policy on manufacturing and operating advanced and safe motorised rickshaws in the capital.
