Regulations for ship breaking industry emphasised

CHITTAGONG, Dec 04: Formulation and implementation of specific rules and regulations for the ship breaking industry (SBI) has become essential in order to preserve ecological balance, protect the rights of workers as well as ensuring revenue.
Speakers expressed the above view while discussing the topic 'Formulation of draft rules and regulations for Ship Breaking Industry' arranged by the Bangladesh Environment Lawyers Association (BELA) at a local hotel Monday.
Senior lawyer of BELA Advocate Iqbal Kabir presided over the meeting and placed the draft rules and regulations of SBI.
The proposals include formation of a committee with representatives of the workers, earmarking of a specialised zone for the SBI, ensuring pollution free status of the procured ship.
