FE Report
The country's private real estate developers are organising a five-day housing fair in the capital to help the global economic crisis-hit sector weather the current bad-patch.
The fair titled 'REHAB Fair 2009' will be organised by Real Estate and Housing Association of Bangladesh (REHAB), a trade group of 589 developers, at Dhaka Sheraton Hotel from January 5 to 9.
This was disclosed at a press conference at National Press Club in the city Saturday.
State Minister for Public Works and Housing Abdul Mannan Khan is expected to inaugurate the ninth fair of the trade body.
A total of 268 stalls would be set up, where 262 REHAB members and six financial institutions would display their products, said REHAB general secretary Khalled Mohammed Jewel Mollah.
He said the country's housing sector is experiencing sluggish growth due to global meltdown and lack of a far-sighted national housing plan.
"The activities of the developers are also being hampered due to sky-rocketing price of land, lack of coordination among the service providers, rising prices of building materials and high bank interest rates."
"But we are trying our best to keep the flat and plot prices within the reach of the people," the REHAB secretary said.
Over 5,500 flats and plots would be up for sale during the winter fair, said REHAB president Engr Tanveerul Haque Probal adding that the participants are hoping to bag orders for up to Tk 5 billion.
The entry fee for the event has been fixed at Tk 50 and Tk 100. However, freedom fighters and the physically challenged will get free entry, the organisers said.
Fair committee convener Sayed Nazrul Biddut, joint convener Zohir Ahmed, REHAB vice president Md Abdur Rahim Khan, joint secretary Murad Iqbal Chowdhury and executive committee member Jahid Hossain also attended the press brief.
