Monday, 3 December 2007

FE Report
The interim government will soon sit with foreign development agencies and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to prepare both short and long-term rehabilitation programmes for the country's Sidr-affected coastal districts.
The decision was taken Sunday at the weekly meeting of the Council of Advisers with Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed in the chair, the Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Syed Fahim Monaim told a press briefing.
After reviewing the post-cyclone relief and emergency rehabilitation activities, the meeting also laid emphasis on launching an extensive programme for rehabilitating the infrastructures and agriculture, which were wrecked by the Sidr on November 15 last.
The 70th meeting of the Council of the Advisers also discussed the proposed 'Independent Election Commission Secretariat Ordinance 2007' and asked the law ministry to place the draft ordinance again before the council after further scrutiny.
Earlier, the Council of Advisers at its June 23 meeting had agreed in principle to approve the proposal for establishing an independent Election Commission (EC) secretariat in line with the demands from various quarters, especially the members of the civil society, Fahim said.
However, the meeting approved the proposed amendment to the article 8 (eight) of the 'Artharin Adalat Act 2003, extending the timeframe for settlement of appeals to one year from the existing 180 days.
It also agreed in principle to approve the proposed 'Fish Feed and Livestock Feed Ordinance 2007' and advised the law ministry to send the draft ordinance again to the council in two months time after further scrutiny, Fahim told newsmen.
Use and mixing of harmful chemicals, antibiotics, growth hormones have been prohibited under the proposed ordinance, he said, adding that all fish and livestock feeds would require laboratory testing before marketing.
The main objectives of the proposed ordinance are to ensure the quality of fish and meat both for the local and export markets meets the required standard, he added.
Responding to a query, he said the government has already launched VGF (vulnerable group feeding) programme in some Sidr-affected districts while the remaining areas would soon come under the programme in phases.
