REHAB starts anti-mosquito drive

Real Estate and Housing Association of Bangladesh (REHAB) has launched a two-month long cleanliness campaign in different parts of Dhaka city aiming to wipe off Aedes mosquito from the capital.
Aedes is a mosquito that can spread dengue fever, chikungunya, Zika fever, Mayaro and yellow fever viruses, and other disease agents. The mosquito lays eggs in clean and stagnant water, basement and rooftops of houses, offices and other establishments, underconstruction buildings and spaces between buildings/structures, etc.
Acting President of REHAB Nurunnabi Chowdhury Shawon, MP, announced launching of the anti-aedes campaign from a rally in the city on Tuesday. He also participated in the cleanliness activities after inaugurating the drive against the dengue virus-carrying mosquito.
They cleaned basements and rooftop of residential buildings, shops and other structures in the various wards in the capital on the first day of the campaign.
Speaking after the rally, Shawon said the government has taken proper and effective action to stop spreading dengue virus across the country.
The REHAB has formed a 10-member committee that will work with ward councilors to destroy aedes mosquito's breeding grounds, he announced.
The ruling party lawmaker urged the people from all walks of life to work together to prevent the moaquito-borne deadly disease.
He also said their cleaning activities will continue for the next 60 days from Tuesday.
Liakat Ali Bhuiyan, first vice president of the association and Kamrul Islam, chairman of parliamentary standing committee for culture, were present during the drive, among others.
Unofficially, the dengue death toll stood at 65 as of Tuesday while official figure shows 23 people died of the disease.
Some 29,912 people have been infected with the deadly virus until Tuesday, according to data available from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
The number was 10,148 in 2018.
