Fair begins
FE Report
The country's first ever REHAB Summer Fair began in the city Thursday when the realtors renewed their calls for a major reforms in the regulatory body RAJUK.
The REHAB fair being held at Dhaka Sheraton Hotel in the city will continue until June 6.
The real estate developers also called for more private sector involvement in various government projects while demanded a level playing field for all stakeholders in the country's real estate sector.
The realtors blamed the government statutory body for its lengthy approach in decision-making, saying, "RAJUK should act solely as a regulatory body; rather than running its own real estate business,"
Real Estate and Housing Association of Bangladesh (REHAB) organised the fair for the first time in this part of the year in a bid to boost sale of flats claiming that the sector has been hurt by the ongoing global financial crisis.
RAJUK and all other government bodies related to real estate sector should come under a single platform and should adopt the culture of one stop service to speed up their decision making, the realtors said.
They underlined the need for more private sector involvement in various upcoming government projects in real estate sector.
State Minister for Housing and Public Works Advocate Abdul Mannan Khan, who attended the fair inauguration as the chief guest, asked for more public private partnership in the real estate sector.
"A number of forthcoming housing projects initiated by the government will welcome investment from the private sector in the government provided land," he said.
"The government is planning to build four satellite towns along with four more flyovers while Dhaka ring road is also going to be constructed within a short time in a bid to mitigate the housing crisis and ensure a planned urbanisation," Mannan added.
Nasrul Hamid MP, speaking at the function, called for a five percent cut in the registration fees and a similar reduction in other utility services for the real estate sector.
"The Real Estate Ordinance should only be ratified as a law after thorough review and discussion at the parliamentary standing committee on Housing and Public Works Ministry," Nasrul Hamid, who is also a member of the committee said.
