Rehabilitation of fishermen begins to save Jatka

SHARIATPUR, March 28 (BSS): The implementation of a four- month relief and rehabilitation programme for 11,000 families of fishermen has started in the district to encourage them to refrain from catching Jatka [hilsha fry] from February to May.
The government has allocated 1,100 tonnes of foodgrain and Tk 4.0 million (40 lakh) for the project.
Jatiya Sangsad Deputy Speaker Col (Retd) Shaukat Ali formally inaugurated the programme at Char Atra union of Naria Upazila.
District Fisheries Officer Mohammad Aminul Islam said that the river Padma from Goshaihat to Jajira and about 130 kilometres of the river Meghna are the breeding place of hilsha fish.
Therefore, the government has undertaken the rehabilitation programme for the poor fishermen to prevent them from catching jatka.
The fisheries officials said that in the first phase of the project this year, 1,000 fishermen's families were given Tk 2,000 each per month. In the second phase, another 1,000 families would be given the financial assistance.
Besides, distribution of 30 kg rice per month for each family would be continuing among 168 families in Shariatpur Sadar Upazila, 1,100 families in Naria Upazila, 360 families in Jajira Upazila, 325 families in Damudda Upazila, 2,430 families in Goshaihat Upazila, 4,790 families in Bhedarganj Upazila.
