FE Report | Wednesday, 16 April 2014

'Neglect and wrong treatment' were responsible for the death of Sirajul Islam, a former president of National Press Club Employees' Union, relatives and family members alleged at a press conference Tuesday.
The press conference was organised at the National Press Club, where they demanded exemplary punishment to the doctors responsible for the death.
Speaking at the press briefing, daughter of Sirajul Islam Farhana Nasrin said her father was taken to BIRDEM Hospital in the city at night on Wednesday last and he was admitted to Ward No 132(Bed Number-1331) where he was attacked with diarrhoea.
She said her father felt breathing problem from April 13 last and relatives called the on-duty doctors. After supplying oxygen the left the patient at about 4:30pm on the day, she added.
"We called the doctors as condition of my father deteriorated further after 6:00pm. But nobody responded to the call. After frequent calls, the doctors decided to give artificial oxygen to him (her father) in a situation when he was vomiting," she narrated.
She said artificial mask was given at about 7:20pm and he died when the physicians started pumping the artificial oxygen.
She said doctor at ICU (intensive Coronary Unit) of the hospital informed them that the patient should have been taken to the ICU soon after giving him oxygen but the on-duty doctor did not do it.
"So, it is clearly understood that there was negligence on the part of the doctors and the treatment was wrong, which caused her father's death," she said in tears.
