Release of cargo by August 14 for demurrage waiver

Mayhem causes stockpile of boxes at Ctg port

FE REPORT | Wednesday, 31 July 2024

The importers who failed to release cargoes from Chittagong port due to student protests, curfew and internet outage must do it by August 14 to get a demurrage waiver.
In an order issued on Tuesday, shipping ministry said import consignments that land at the port yard between July 16 and August 05 are eligible to get a store rent/demurrage waiver for a period of seven days.
The facility would not be applicable to those consignments that are not taken delivery by August 14, the letter sent to the Chittagong Port Authority chairman reads.
The ministry has granted the waiver responding to an appeal made by the owners of domestic apparel manufacturing units as they failed to release import cargoes in the second and third weeks of July due to chaos over job-quota reforms.
At one stage, the number of containers reached 41,459 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) on July 24, which is close to 80 per cent of the port's total storage capacity.
This has hampered day-to-day activities at the port yard, according to officials.
