CHITTAGONG, Oct 3: Chittagong Port dock labour leaders today demanded formation of the parliamentary standing committee on shipping ministry afresh by removing three members from the existing committee.
They warned that port activities will be completely halted if those members are not removed.
Chattagram Dock Bandar Shramik Karmachari Federation made the demand at a press meet at Chittagong Press Club in the morning.
Secretary of the organisation Mahfuzur Rahman Khan in a written statement said Md Shah Alam, Shamsul Huq Chowdhury and Nur-e-Alam Chowdhury Liton - three MPs in the standing committee- have been interfering with the tenders for selection of operators in container handling and other port activities.
"Due to their unwanted interference the cargo handling has lessened and stay time of ships have increased," he said.
He said that the parliamentary standing committee has changed 11 times the terms of tender schedule for employment of operators in the container handling at the general cargo berths since 2009.
They also demanded quick implementation of the Karnafuli Container Terminal (KCT), capital dredging in the river Karnafuli and the contracts signed for solving the problems of the dock workers and employees.
