Saturday, 13 November 2010

CHITTAGONG, November 12: Initial rescue operation for the sunken coastal ship started today after its owner assigned a firm to remove its cargo.
Port officials said offloading of chick pea from the shipwreck started in the morning at the initiative of the owner.
Mizanur Rahman, owner of NZ Corporation that owns the coastal ship Hang Gang-2, arrived in Chittagong Friday morning and engagedSA Surveyor, a local firm, for the job.
The workers of SA Surveyor started offloading the chick pea from the shipwreck, the company said.
Officials said the main salvage work of the ship is unlikely to be launched before the Eid-ul-Azha but steps are underway to lighten it by removing most of the cargo.
The coastal ship sank with some 2600 metric tons of chick peas at the Bangla Bazar jute rally ghat in the upper stream of the River Karnafuli off Chittagong Port Wednesday night. The accident took place while detaching the cargo from a mother vessel at the outer anchorage.
