Monday, 13 December 2010

FE Report
Government started crackdown on all overhead wires on thoroughfares between Uttara and Shahbagh in the city in a bid to avoid any accident that could occur from these cables on Sunday.
Starting from Karwan Bazar area of the capital, the removal of the wires, hanging from utility service poles, would continue for the next few days during which cable users might experience interruptions, a press release issued by Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources said.
Power department also requested the cable operators to remove the hanging overhead wires from Uttara - Mohakhali-Birshreshtha Jahangir Gate- Shahbagh route by December 16, the release said.
The two authorities, Dhaka Electric Supply Company (DESCO) and Dhaka Power Distribution Company (DPDC), responsible for maintaining the utility service poles in the city, will start removing the remaining wires from December 17.
Both the authorities had issued a number of notices asking the cable operators and Internet service providers (ISPs) under their jurisdictions to remove hanging wires from poles, the statement added.
An underground optical fibre network, a subterranean channel to accommodate the cables, is already in place and ready for the cable operators and ISPs to get connected, power distribution officials said.
The deadline for cable operators and ISPs to move their cables underground has already been extended thrice over the last few months. The last deadline expired on November 30.
The initiative aims to free the city's landscape from the dreadful jumble of overhead cables, it added.
Apart from being an eyesore, the haphazard installation of cables puts pressure on the electricity poles inviting possible accidents and causing much inconvenience, the statement added.
