Removing sense of unease
Sunday, 5 August 2007
THE economy is passing through a difficult phase. What has created the major problem is a sense of unease over the recent developments relating to anti-corruption drive and tax mobilisation efforts, however, well-intentioned these may be. It is difficult to cleanse the Augean stables in one sweep. It is well-nigh impossible to wipe out corruption, curb tax evasion and stop money laundering by Draconian measures in a situation where things for long have been moving in the wrong direction.
In a way, such irregularities have been embedded into the country's economic system. The basics were not set right and no effort was made to do the same. It is better for the caretaker government to set such basics right so that the scope for indulging in irregularities is minimised. The interim government should go for tough actions against the big fries who have abetted and patronised such wrongs in the society. That will send the right signal to all concerned. There can be a general amnesty with a clear massage that no irregularity or corrupt practices will be tolerated in future and that will help instil confidence in the minds of all concerned.
