NILPHAMARI, Nov 19: Darwani Textile Mill in Nilphamari remains closed for some years. The closure rendered nearly 700 workers and employees of the mill jobless. The mill was established in 1960 on 108 acres of land having 25056 spindles. There were 704 workers, 97 employees and 25 officers in the mill during the days when in was in full operations. In the year 1996 BTMC closed the mill on ground of losses but in the year 1998 again it was made operational on service charge contract system.
In the year 2002 it was closed again leaving the future of the mill in darkness. At present there are 3 officers, 5 employees and 24 security guards in the mill.
During the Prime Minister's visit in Nilphamari last month the workers demanded reopening of the mill.
