Repeated rescheduling of polls a conspiracy, says Hasina

Awami League (AL) President Sheikh Hasina Saturday said repeated rescheduling of parliament elections is nothing but a conspiracy to foil the polls, reports UNB.
She made the remarks to reporters after a meeting with Dhaka University teachers at her Dhanmondi office as the Chief Election Commissioner Dr ATM Shamsul Huda announced a new schedule for the elections.
The Awami League chief urged people to remain alert and foil any conspiracy against the much-awaited elections.
"We have been put in a difficult situation with the election schedule changed four times…But the elections cannot be foiled," she said.
Hasina said, "It is inconceivable why the schedule was changed all on a sudden. Problem is not with us. Government gave a proposal to a party to defer the elections. There is no scope of involving us in this matter."
The Awami League president said she has never seen in her life that the election schedules were changed four times. She said rescheduling of the elections might encourage the use of black money in the electioneering.
Without naming BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's demand for lifting the state of emergency, Hasina said if she wanted withdrawal of the emergency why she had demanded deferment of the elections. Her demand had delayed the withdrawal of the emergency.
On the question of a level-playing field, she said the caretaker government had taken the responsibility of cleansing the real corrupts and was working like "Surf Excel" detergent.
Hasina said the government launched the anti-corruption drive which ultimately turned into anti-politics drive.
