Replant big trees uprooted by Sidr
Monday, 10 December 2007
THE devastation caused by the SIDR in the country's coastal belt is not comparable to the damage done by previous natural calamities. We have lost not only the valuable lives of people but also natural resources due to this cyclone. The met experts, however, say that this destruction might have been more if we did not have the green belt, particularly the Sundarbans, on the southern coast.
SIDR provides us a good lesson why we should protect our environment. The experts think that we would need more than a decade to replace the trees destroyed or uprooted by SIDR in the Sundarbans. It is now our responsibility to find ways -- how to reduce the time to restore our world famous natural heritage. Some experts have suggested that the Sundarbans be left, as it is, so that it can grow without uninterruptions. So the government must take necessary steps in that direction.
But we can also request the government to take initiatives to save the damaged or uprooted big trees, by replanting them. Replanting of the big trees with proper care would save our time and money. We can plant saplings all along our coastal belt, which need several years to mature to protect us and our environment. There are many examples in the world of replanting the big plants uprooted by storms.
