Tuesday, 29 November 2011

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of LGRD and Cooperatives Monday placed its report on Local Government (City Corporation) (Amendment) Bill, 2011 aimed at dividing Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) in two parts in the Jatiya Sangsad, reports UNB. In absence of the chairman of the committee, its member Nur- e-Alam Chowdhury placed the report. The committee recommended to pass the bill in an amended form. The bill was placed in the House on November 23, 2011, by State Minister for LGRD and Cooperatives Jahangir Kabir Nanak for portioning the DCC to provide better services to the city dwellers. The amendment bill has incorporated a new clause-3 Ka- in the Local Government (City Corporation) Act-2009 to divide the DCC. Placing the bill in the House, Nanak said the population of Dhaka City covering an area of 150 square kilometres now stood at over 10 millions. "The city dwellers are not getting expected services from the DCC as it has become very tough to provide the required services to the vast population from one centre, " he said. He said the present activities of the DCC on repairing roads and other physical infrastructures and managing waste, drainage system and water logging are not satisfactory. And because of this, Nanak said, it has become inevitable to divide the DCC into two parts for further consolidating and upgrading its utility and civic services. The proposed two bodies would be named as ' Dhaka North City Corporation' and 'Dhaka South City Corporation,' he said.
