Thursday, 26 March 2009

FE Report
Textile and Jute Minister Abdul Latif Siddiqui has urged jute researchers to develop better quality jute seed for producing finer fibre aiming to restore the past glory of the cash crop.
"Once 70 per cent of the country's total foreign earnings came from jute export. But it has fallen over the years due to many reasons," he said at an inaugural ceremony of a 7-day long diversified jute products fair and exhibition Wednesday.
Jute Diversification Promotion Center (JDPC) in cooperation with Small-scale Entrepreneurship Development in Diversified Jute Products Project and Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI) has organised the fair at the BJRI premises in the city on the occasion of the National and Independence Day-2009.
The main objective of the event is to help regain the lost pride of the jute industry by increasing its use locally.
Speaking as chief guest, the minister said the government is committed to providing support to all the sick industries like jute.
"We've to change the traditional use of jute," he said.
He also said increased use of jute in the country will help generate employment and reduce environment pollution.
A total of 56 entrepreneurs will showcase their products in 60 stalls in the fair, which will continue up to March 31. It will remain open for all from 10am to 8 pm.
Among others, secretary of the Textile and Jute Ministry CQK Mostaq Ahmed and JDPC executive director ABM Abdullah were present on the occasion.
