Responding to descriptive type of questions at exam

Sunday, 4 October 2009

FE Special
STUDENTS often have to answer descriptive type of questions in the exam hall. Many of them find difficulty in answering these type of questions. They need to undergo a rigorous preparation for better handling of these questions. Three things would be helpful for them: habit of thinking, writing and discussion.
Thinking: Students need to spend at least as much time in thinking as much they have spent in reading the lesson. Through thinking deeply about an issue, they will be able to remember their lessons better. Also they will develop how to 'connect' ideas or theories or issues. Students need to know how to see anything from different perspectives. For example, they can see the issue of 'dengue fever' with the eyes of a physician, journalist, sociologist and so on. When they will see anything from various perspective, they would grow the fascination to think about anything. The task of thinking will no more be boring to them. Habit of thinking also will help them produce anything instantly in the exam environment.
Writing: Students need to know how to address any issue critically in their writing. They need to develop the habit of writing on whatever they have read. When they write, they can expand their thinking. They will get clear idea of the issues. Gradually, students need to learn to write in such a way that their writing become impressive to the examiners.
Discussion: Discussion with the fellow classmates or in their groups helps learners have better understanding of the issues. Through questions and answers, they will feel at home about the issues. Since in a discussion they have to say about anything readily, they will be able to reproduce anything instantly in the exam.
