Restore Hatirjheel and Begunbari canals

Tuesday, 13 November 2007

THE council of advisers recently took a decision to recover all the lands along the Hatirjheel and Begunbari canals from the illegal possession of the grabbers. The meeting also took the decision to improve their water flow to save the Dhaka city from water logging. All city residents, particularly the environmentalists have welcomed the bold decisions of the government.
But so far the government took no action to implement its decision to recover the lands along the two canals. No such action was visible. We still see the signboards of different organisations that grabbed the lands.
Different quarters including real estate companies tried to illegally grab the canal lands over the years for which the city lost its drainage system and has to experience waterlogging even after a little rainfall.
We expect the government to start and speed up the process of recovery of the illegally occupied lands. Tough and uncompromising action from government will act as a deterrent to bids to grab such lands in the future. The government should also build walkways where it is possible along the canals for public convenience.
