Restore law and order in the interest of economy: DCCI

FE REPORT | Wednesday, 7 August 2024

Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) has called for immediate steps to restore law and order in the interest of the country's economy and stability.
"On behalf of the business community, DCCI requests immediate steps to restore law and order in Dhaka city and around the country," it said in a statement Tuesday.
It also urged immediate formation and declaration of the interim government in a lawful manner to contain economic losses.
"We request all concerned to take necessary measures to this end. We believe interim government is a must to restore democratic election process and hand the country back to its people and its elected representatives," it maintained.
In the wake of recent political unrest and challenges, the DCCI underscored the urgent need for quick restoration of law and order and requested all necessary action to restore normal economic activities as soon as possible.
"The nationwide economic operations have been significantly hampered," the statement said.
"The recent events have taken a large toll on our lives and economy, disrupting living and economic conditions. Unless measures are effective, supply chain disruptions will cause further damage and add to public sufferings," it added.
The resumption of economic operations at the fullest extent is a must for the greater interest of the nation, the DCCI said.
The trade body further said that the private sector, the key driver of the economy, requires prompt and substantial supports to overcome the setbacks caused by recent disruptions.
"Moving forward, a conducive environment must be established to facilitate economic recovery featured by political and regulatory certainty," it said.
"By fostering a stable political environment, we can rebuild our businesses' confidence and activities at home and abroad," it mentioned.
