Restrictions on press freedom: an ominous signature
Thursday, 3 June 2010
One of the few feathers a Bangladeshi could wear in his cap and flaunt to the world was freedom of press in his own country. With closures and banning of many news and social media like Channel One, Jamuna TV, You Tube, Facebook, News From Bangladesh, and the Amar Desh, that feather of glory seems to be blowing away in the air.
The gagging of press freedom does evoke a sad memory of the past. One should not forget the ultimate result that ensued when the free press was abolished..
The authorities concerned should not get carried away by those people who are advising the government to silence the voices of protest.
Freedom of expression is a beauty in a multiparty democracy. Kill freedom of expression, if we have to kill democracy.
A puzzled observer
