Results from polling-centres can be publicised: EC
Tuesday, 23 December 2008
Authentic results of the December 29 national election, collected directly from the polling-centres, can be published in the media, EC told journalists Monday, dispelling recent confusions, reports UNB.
Election Commission (EC) Secretary Humayun Kabir said election results obtained from the returning officers and presiding officers are allowed to be broadcast through the media.
"There's no bar from the EC to broadcast the centrewise results," he said, explaining the latest position of the Election Commission over election coverage.
He informed that there would be 35,217 polling-centres across the country for voting in the crucial general election.
After counting the ballots, the presiding officers at the polling-stations would hang the result sheets outside "from where anybody can collect the information", the secretary said in a meeting with senior journalists from print and electronic media at the EC secretariat auditorium.
The media-men urged the EC to provide equal facilities to both private and state-owned media in broadcasting the election results from the commission on the polling day.
They also suggested the commission to take decision for keeping open mobile phones across the country on the election day to quickly disseminate the news of election from the spots.
The EC officials said the commission would later take decision about this issue, which they said is related to the security measures.
Kabir said, "The EC's suggestion about mobile phone will be given later after the commission meeting."
In view of strict rules made through the politico-electoral reforms in the interim period, the meeting discussed how the media can broadcast the unofficial results of the ninth parliamentary election.
Apart from Humayun Kabir, joint secretaries Rafiqul Islam and Nurul Islam Khan, and deputy secretary Jesmine Tuli were among other EC officials present.
