Retirement allowance giving ceremony of Mongla Port workers held

KHULNA, Nov 8: At last 1,758 retrenched workers of Mongla Port have been given their retirement allowance. The Shipping Minister Shahajan Khan inaugurated the retirement allowance giving programme through handing over of cheques to the 25 workers as chief guest at a function held today (Sunday) at Mongla Port premises.
State Minister for Labour and Employment Begum Monnujan Sufian, Khulna City Corporation Mayor (KCC) Talukder Abdul Khaleque, Dr Mozammel Hossain MP, Habibun Nahar MP and Mir Showkat Ali Badsha MP attended the function as special guests.
The function was presided over by Commodore M Faruque BN, Chairman, Mongla Port Authority while high officials of the port were present in the function.
Port source said that the caretaker government abolished the Dock labourer Management Board on August-1, 2008 as a result of which about 4000 workers became jobless. The retrenched workers observed various programmes including demonstration and movement during the period demanding their retirement allowance. The present government has taken an initiative to pay 75 per cent retirement allowance among the 1,758 registered workers and the rest 25 per cent will be paid in the second phase. In this connection government allocated Tk. 14 crore 36 lakh 67 thousand on May-10, 2009.
Our Mongla correspondent said later the Shipping Minister Shahajan Khan joined a public meeting as chief guest arranged by Mongla Upazila Awami League the meeting was addressed among others, by State Minister for Labour and Employment Begum Monnujan Sufian, Khulna City Corporation Mayor (KCC) Talukder Abdul Khaleque, Dr Mozammel Hossain MP, Habibun Nahar MP, Mir Showkat Ali Badsha MP and Qamruzzaman Tuku General Secretary of Bagerhat District Awami League.
