Revenue income at Benapole land port comes down

KHULNA, Jan 3: Revenue income has come down during the first 6 months of the current fiscal year from the Benapole Customs House. The revenue income has been fixed at Tk. 24.75 billion for the current fiscal. According to that the target was fixed for first 6 months at Tk. 11.94 billion for the first 6 months and the amount realized was Tk. 10.54 billion.
Sources said that irregularities and corruption have increased at Benapole land port from the beginning of the current fiscal year. It is alleged that a powerful syndicate evaded tax from the imported goods by managing customs officials and security guards.
The president of C&F Association of Benapole Al-Haj Shamsur Rahman said that the revenue income has been reduced due to increase in import cost and hike in rate of dollar. He also hinted about the mismanagement of the port authority.
Joint Customs Commissioner of Beanpole office Akbar Hossain said that the revenue income came down due also to import of tax-free goods from India.
Port facilities to be expanded
BSS reports: Minister for Shipping Shahjahan Khan has said the Benapole Port, country's main land port, would be turned into a world standard Port.
He made the announcement while he was exchanging views with the concerned officials of the port held at its auditorium after visiting the Benapole Land Port Monday.
The minister said steps would be taken for the expansion of the port facilities to be used as transit to boost trade and business with different country of the world like China, Nepal, Bhutan, India and Singapore.
He also said Industrial Police will be deployed in the port, like Chittagong Sea Port, to protect import and export goods from pilferage.
