Jamaat-e-Islami leader M Kamaruzzaman’s lawyer has said that they will file a petition seeking review against the Appellate Division’s judgment that upheld the capital punishment to the condemned war crimes convict. ‘We think there is a scope of filing a petition seeking review against the Supreme Court (SC) verdict as we have not received the copy of the full text of the SC judgment, Kamaruzzaman’s chief defence counsel Khandker Mahbub Hossain said on Wednesday afternoon. He said: ‘As soon as we receive the copy of the Appellate Division’s judgment, we’ll file the review petition.’ He also urged all concerned not to execute the sentence of death until the disposal of the review plea. On the other hand, contradicting Khandker Mahbub Hossain’s observation, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam said the jail authorities can execute any time the order of the sentence of death awarded to Kamaruzzaman. He said the matter depends on the decision of the government, in that case, there’s no scope of filing any review petition. The chief law officer of the government argued, ‘It’s the matter of the jail authorities as well as the government to decide as to when and on which date the execution will be made effective. I don’t think the requirement of waiting in order to execute the sentence of death until the release of the copy of the full text of the judgment,’ according to a news agency.
