NILPHAMARI, Oct 12: Production of environment-friendly bio-gas from cattle dung is still neglected in the northern region. Bio-gas, a renewable source of energy, can be used as fuel for cooking, lighting, running vehicles and generators etc.
Sources said, bio-gas has a great potential as alternative source of energy in Nilphamari district as nearly four million kilogramme cattle dung is available per day here from 0.4 million cows and buffalos. This huge quantity of waste could be used in establishing 0.1 million bio-gas plants beside the homesteads of the remote villages.
Ministry of Science and Information and Communication Technology had launched the bio-gas plant project in 1996 with an initial involvement of Tk 70 million.
Under the project, Bangladesh Council for Science And Industrial Research set up 5000 plants in the rural areas of the country. In the second phase, there was a project to install another 25000 plants all over the country.
A biogas plant costs Tk 15000 to Tk 18000 to be set up for generating clean energy. Government used to give subsidy up to Tk 7500 and the owner paid the rest amount. But the project seems to have been abandoned now.
People of the region demanded revival of the project in full swing. Bio-fuel helps reducing carbon gas emission, fossil fuel use, increasing national energy security, rural development and a sustainable system for the future.
