Reward for helping arrest of bribe-takers announced

Wednesday, 23 July 2008

THAKURGAON, Jul 22 (UNB): Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) Chairman Hasan Mashhud Chowdhury shot a question pointblank at government officials and employees in a meet whether their wives and children know that they commit corruption in public offices.

"And do your fathers know whether the money you send to them is halal or haram?" He straight asked them.

The former army chief-turned crusader against corruption posed the rhetorical questions while addressing a meeting with government officials and employees on institutional initiative to prevent corruption at district Shilpakala Academy Tuesday.

He said a deputy commissioner should be an honest person, who would ensure transparency in every sector in the district on his own initiative.

The ACC Chairman urged the government officials to work on behalf of the government with honesty. "Bribe could not be taken for any government work," he said, on a note of caution for any venal official.

He announced that anyone who helps in arresting persons involved in taking or giving bribes would be rewarded.

At one stage of the meeting, general Mashhud asked if there was anyone in the assembly who does not take bribe. And, to his dismay, there was no response from anyone.

He then took on the role of a preacher and said, "Bribery is 'haram.'

So don't feed your children with the income which is haram."

Identifying service as the most corrupt sector, the ACC chief said the common village people still have to pay bribe to get a work done. "They know that they are bribing government."

He sought public help in curbing corruption, saying, "Corruption could not be uprooted but can be brought to a tolerable level."

General Hasan Mashhud called upon government officials and employees of all levels to get out of the vicious cycle of corruption.

"It is not logical to take bribe showing the reason of their minimum salary as many maintain their family with it," he said.

Deputy Commissioner Miah Abdullah Mamun and Police Super AKM Iqbal Hossain and over 500 government officials and employees were present.
