Rice, edible oil dearer in markets

The shortage in supply made rice and edible oil dearer. Vegetable prices declined while the prices of other essential commodities remained unchanged in the city markets over the past week.
Traders said the prices of rice have recently gone up in the local markets as transportation was badly hampered due to flood across the country.
Moreover, the prices of the staple food have increased abnormally after the government's announcement of procurement of rice in bulk amount, said a wholesale rice trader at the city's Badamtoli wholesale rice market.
He said many hoarders have taken the opportunity of stockpiling rice after the government's announcement of procuring rice for selling in any future crisis.
However, during the last week, at the wholesale level, prices of Indian variety of Swarna and local Paari rose to Tk 900-Tk 910 per maund from their previous rates at Tk 820-Tk 850 per maund.
Lata variety of rice was selling at Tk 950-Tk 960 per maund compared with its previous rates at Tk 900-Tk 920 per maund and IRRI variety at Tk 850 per maund compared with its previous rates at Tk 800-Tk 820 per maund.
During the last week, Nazirshail from Savar was selling at Tk 1000 per maund compared with its previous rate at Tk 950 per maund and Nazirshail from North Bengal at Tk 1200 per maund compared with its previous rate at Tk 1100 per maund.
Minicate variety of rice was selling at Tk 1080-Tk 1100 per maund compared with its previous rate at Tk 1050 per maund.
At the retail level, fine varieties of rice were selling at Tk 29-Tk 32 per kg compared with their previous rates at Tk 28-Tk 29 per kg and the coarse varieties of rice at Tk 23-Tk 25 per kg compared with their previous rates at Tk 22-Tk 23 per kg.
The short supply caused by delay in unloading of edible oil at Chittagong port pushed up the prices of the item abnormally in the local market, said market sources.
According to the sources, a one-litre can of edible oil was selling at Tk 90-Tk 95 at the retail level against its previous rate of Tk 74-Tk 76 per litre.
Talking to the FE, a trader at the city's Moulavibazar said at the wholesale level soybean oil was selling at Tk 2,760 per maund, super palm Tk 2,700 per maund and palm Tk 2,660 per maund Thursday.
On the previous week, at the wholesale level soybean oil was selling at Tk 2,720-Tk 2740 per maund, super palm oil at Tk 2700 per maund and palm oil at Tk 2650 per maund, traders said.
During the last week green chilli was selling at Tk 100-Tk120 per kg compared with its previous rates at Tk 160-Tk180 per kg.
During the last week, at the retail level, brinjal was selling at Tk 36-Tk40 per kg compared with its previous rates at Tk 40-Tk48 per kg, bitter gourd at Tk 30-Tk32 per kg compared with its previous rates at Tk 36-Tk40 per kg.
Prices of snake gourd and ridge gourd remained unchanged at Tk 28-Tk30 per kg, traders said.
Potato price remained unchanged in the city markets at Tk 20-Tk21 per kg over the past week. Eggs were selling at Tk 60 per dozen, unchanged from the previous week.
During the last week at the retail level prices of one kilogram (kg) of packaged coarse flour remained unchanged at Tk30 per kg and two-kg packet at Tk 60.
Prices of the fine variety of lentil remained unchanged at Tk 72-Tk74 per kg and its Turkish variety at Tk 56-Tk60 per kg. Prices of 'moong' pulse remained unchanged at Tk 70-Tk 74 per kg during the last week.
During the last week price of ginger remained unchanged at Tk 50-Tk60 per kg, onion at Tk 30-Tk32 per kg and garlic at Tk 60 per kg.
In the last week, prices of poultry birds remained unchanged at Tk 90-Tk100 per kg and beef at Tk 180 per kg.
During the last week a medium-size hilsa fish was selling at Tk 350-Tk400 per piece, unchanged from the previous week.
During the last week, at the wholesale level sugar was selling at Tk 910 per maund, unchanged from the previous week. At the retail level sugar was selling at Tk28-Tk30 per kg during the last week, unchanged from the previous week.
Mutton was selling at Tk 220-Tk 230 per kg, unchanged from the previous week. Traders said prices of refined salt remained unchanged at Tk 18 per kg.
