Rice, edible oil stable, but shrimp, potato up in city markets

Prices of shrimp, potato, ginger and garlic increased in the city's retail markets last week while prices of other essential commodities including rice, edible oil and vegetables remained stable.
Prices of different sea fishes including hilsha fell by Tk 30 to Tk 50 per kg on an average at the retail level, market sources said.
A medium-size hilsha was selling at Tk 200 to Tk 250, down from Tk 250 to Tk 300 of a week before in the city's fish market.
On the other hand, shrimp was selling at Tk 350 to Tk 400, up from Tk 250 to Tk 280 of a week ago.
Of different sweet water fishes, ruhi was selling at Tk 280 to Tk 300 per kg, katla Tk 200 to Tk 250 per kg and poya Tk 150 to Tk 180 per kg and pangas Tk 140 to Tk 150 per kg. Other sweet water fishes including puti, tengra, magur were selling at prices between Tk 220 and Tk 250 per kg on an average.
Besides, the price of potato increased to Tk 24 per kg from the range of Tk 22 to Tk 23 of a week ago, as NGOs and other social organisations were buying the food item for supplying to the 'Aila'-affected areas as an instant relief item.
Prices of ginger and garlic witnessed an upward trend at the retail level. The local ginger and the imported China variety were selling at Tk 65 to Tk 72 and Tk 45 to Tk 48 per kg respectively against the previous week's prices of Tk 55-Tk 60 and Tk 40-Tk 45. Similarly, garlic increased by Tk 10 per kg to Tk 80 from the previous week's Tk 70 per kg.
According to retailers in the city's different rice markets, prices of fine rice witnessed a downward trend of Tk 2 to Tk 5 per kg.
'Minicate' and 'Nazirshail' were selling at Tk 31-Tk 33 per kg and Tk 32-Tk 34 per kg on an average last week. On the other hand, coarse varieties of rice including BR-28 were selling at Tk 24-Tk 25 per kg, Pari Tk 23, Paizam Tk 25 and Swarna Tk 21- Tk 22 per kg on an average at the retail level.
A kilo of local onion was selling at Tk 28- Tk 30, up by Tk 4 from Tk 24- Tk 26 of a week ago. A kilo of the imported Indian onion was selling at Tk 16-Tk 18 per kg, down from Tk 18 -Tk 20.
Prices of the non-brand soybean and super palm oil were Tk 83 and Tk 80- Tk 81 respectively on an average last week, down from their previous rates.
Prices of different brands of edible oil in five litre cans ranged between Tk 420 and Tk 430 on an average at the retail level.
Traders said retail prices of local and imported lentil went down from their previous rates in the city markets.
On Friday, a kilo of local lentil was sold at Tk 105-Tk 110 per kg, down from Tk 110-Tk 115 per kg. The imported Nepalese and Turkish varieties were priced at Tk 85-Tk 90 per kg, down from the previous week's Tk 88-Tk 98 per kg.
Non-brand sugar declined to Tk 38-Tk 40 per kg from Tk 42-Tk 44 per kg.
Market sources said the retail price of every four eggs, both farm and local, remained unchanged at the previous rate of Tk 28. The price of poultry birds was Tk 120-Tk 140 per kg on an average.
A kilogramme of beef was priced at Tk 220-Tk 230 and mutton Tk 320- Tk 330 per kg on an average at the city's retail outlets.
Of vegetables, the lady's finger was selling Friday at Tk 20-Tk 24 a kg, brinjal Tk 24-Tk 30, papaya Tk 14-Tk 16, carrot Tk 24, a medium-size gourd Tk 35-Tk 40 and a kg of green chili Tk 48-Tk 50 per kg.
Cucumber was being sold at prices between Tk 20 and Tk 24 per kg, tomato Tk 24 to Tk 28 and potal Tk 20 per kg on an average at the city's retail outlets.
The price of canned powder-milk remained unchanged at Tk 370-Tk 380. Seasonal fruits such as mango, jackfruit, lichi were available at cheaper prices in the city fruit markets.
