Rice, vegetables prices show steep rise in Narsingdi

NARSINGDI, Oct 9: Middle and low income people are struggling to make both ends meet as prices of vegetables recorded a rising trend during the last few weeks in the Narsingdi district. While visiting the kitchen markets at Natun Bazar, Puran Bazar, Battola Bazar, this correspondent found a hike in the prices of rice, ladies finger, brinjal, papaya, potato, bitter gourd, green chilli, garlic and onion.
A visit to wholesale, retail and kitchen markets in Narsingdi recently showed prices of coarse rice gone up by 2 to Tk 4 per kg during the week. The ordinary- grade Lali Mota rice retailed between Tk 32 and Tk 33 in Narsingdi wholesale and retail markets. Coarse variety Guti rice was priced between Tk 35 and Tk 36, up by Tk 3 in five days. Nazirsail is at Tk 45 pet kg but two weeks back it was at 40. Minicate is at Tk 42 but two weeks back it was at Tk 38.
The ordinary hybrid coarse rice, meanwhile, sold for Tk. 33-34 per kg in bulk trading at Narsingdi chal potti. According to traders, the latest round of increase in price of rice came as the government increased procurement price, thereby triggering a decline in supply of coarse varieties.
Vendors said the rising trend of vegetable was noticeable for the last three weeks. They said the supply of vegetables declined due to heavy rain in the countryside during the last couple of weeks. The price of Patal went up by Tk 14 compared to that of the last week, brinjal by Tk 10 to Tk 15 per kg. It was selling at Tk 45 to Tk 50 the kitchen markets while it sold at Tk 35 to Tk 40 few days ago. The price of bitter gourd was at Tk 50 per kg compared to Tk 40 last week The price of tomato went up by Tk 40 per kg. A couple of weeks ago it was sold at Tk 100 per kg.
The price of farm egg was at Tk 28 to Tk 30 per four in different shops of the kitchen markets showing an increase up by Tk 4 to Tk 6.
