Rich nations need to compensate
Friday, 12 September 2008
IT is under consideration of Bangladesh to demand compensation from the wealthy nations, responsible for climate change.
The rich nations are causing us harm with their uncontrolled green house emissions into the atmosphere. Consequently, Bangladesh, like many other countries, is now experiencing more flooding, droughts as well as cyclones.
The World Bank (WB) and other donors pointed out the need of the country in combating the climate change impacts.
The Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) predicted that rising sea levels will devour 17 per cent of Bangladesh's total land mass by 2050, leaving at least 20 million people homeless. So we need to get prepared to face the consequences of the climate changes. At the same time, it is the duty of the rich nations to compensate the countries that would suffer for their wrongdoings. They also need to give priority to ease the immigrant rules as climate change would displace millions of people from the coastal belts.
