BRAHMANBARIA, July 14: The government is being deprived of a large amount of revenue due to rise in cross-border smuggling in the district, sources said.
As the Indian smuggled goods have flooded the local markets, sales of the same go unchecked here.
Hundreds of smugglers reportedly carry smuggled goods by road and trains everyday.
Smugglers first stockpile the goods in the bordering villages of the district. Later, they smuggle those to the local markets at a convenient time using different modes of transports like micro-bus, passenger bus, tempo and rickshaw van.
Goods like cloths, crockery items, dry-cell battery, sugar, salt, bicycle and parts, cosmetics, imitation jewellery, Phensidyl, whiskey, beer, hemp, heroin, onion, garlic, wood, horlicks and other commodities are being smuggled into the country everyday from India, it is alleged.
On the other hand, Bangladeshi cloths, brass and bell metal, powdered-milk, petrol, diesel, edible oil, potato, fish and dried fish are smuggled out to India.
Smugglers use women and children to carry goods from one place to another.
