Rise in prices of onion, tea, dry chili in city

Prices of onion, tea and dry chili have increased in the city's retail markets but prices of other essentials including rice and flour remained unchanged during the past one week.

According to traders, prices of non-brand edible oil declined by Tk 2.0 -Tk 3.0 per kg at the wholesale level.

Prices of onion, both local and imported, showed an upward trend in the city's retail markets. Prices of both the varieties jumped by Tk 2.0-Tk3.0 per kg during the past one week due to shortage in supply because traders were hoarding the item for upcoming Ramadan, traders of the city's different retail markets said.

During the same period, they said, local onion was selling at Tk 30 -Tk 32 per kg against Tk 28-Tk 30 per kg one week back while the prices of imported Indian onion rose by Tk 6.0 per kg to Tk 26 per kg against Tk 18-Tk 20 per kg in the city's retail markets in the previous week.

A packet of 400 gram tea of different brands was selling at Tk 92 against the previous rate of Tk 72.

The finer variety of dry chili was selling at Tk 140-Tk150 per kg against its previous price of Tk 120-Tk130.

Traders at the wholesale markets of Karwan Bazar and Naya Bazar said that soyabean oil and super palm oil were selling at Tk 118 -Tk 120 per kg and Tk 104 per kg respectively.

But prices of non-brand edible oil at the retail level remained almost unchanged at their previous rates and were Tk 120-Tk 122 per kg and Tk 106- Tk110 per kg respectively.

During the same week, edible oil of different brands in five-litre cans was selling at Tk 600- Tk 610.

According to traders, the Minicate variety of rice was selling at Tk 44-Tk 45 per kg and Nazirshail at Tk 42 -Tk 48 per kg against Tk 42-Tk 44 and Tk 38-Tk 44 per kg respectively a week ago.

Coarse varieties of rice, especially BR-28, were selling at Tk 39-Tk 41 per kg against Tk 38-Tk 39 per kg in the previous week.

At wholesale level, the Minicate variety of rice was selling at Tk 1570 -Tk 1580 per maund (37.300 kg) and the Nazirshail variety of rice was selling at Tk 1600-Tk 1620 per maund during the last week, unchanged at their previous rates.

Besides, BR-28, widely consumed by low-income people, was selling at Tk 1350-Tk 1400 per maund, unchanged from the prices of the previous week at the wholesale level.

Traders said prices of the finer variety of local lentil and imported Nepalese and Turkish varieties remained unchanged at their previous rates in the local markets. But traders of different retail markets said prices of lentil would be high for upcoming Ramadan.

In the past one week, traders said prices of coarse flour remained unchanged at their previous rates at Tk 39-Tk 40 per kg.

In the past one week, the price of non-brand sugar was Tk 36 per kg, unchanged at its previous rate.

According to the traders of city's retail markets, prices of a number of vegetables, including ladies' finger, brinjal and cowpea were Tk 28 per kg, Tk 48 per kg and Tk 30 per kg respectively, unchanged from their previous rates. But price of green chilli that had shown an upward trend at the local market was selling at Tk 48 per kg.

Cucumber, tomato and green banana were selling at Tk 40 per kg, Tk 65 per kg and Tk 20 (four pieces) respectively, almost unchanged from the previous week.

Potato was selling at Tk 18 per kg, remaining unchanged from its prices a week ago.

According to the retailers, during the same period, prices of poultry birds were Tk 110-Tk 115 per kg, unchanged at their previous rates. A dozen of eggs were selling at Tk 65-Tk 70.

In the city's retail markets, beef and mutton were selling at Tk 180-Tk 200 per kg and Tk 250-Tk 300 per kg respectively, unchanged from their prices a week ago.
