Rising crime rate in Mirpur
Wednesday, 6 April 2011
The law and order situation in Mirpur is turning from bad to worse every day. Increasing population and growth of businesses combined with inadequate policing has made it easy for extortionist and gangs to operate in the area. They become almost invincible when they link themselves with people connected to the local units of political parties.
Street crimes are on the rise, so is the level of serious crimes. Murders and extortions occurs almost on a regular basis in Mirpur. The situation has become bad that residents and business owners of the area cannot sleep with peace of mind. No one is sure when the collectors of different 'bosses' will come to them with demands for extraordinary amounts of money as extortion. There is no escaping of that if you operate any sort of business there, big or small. Things get nasty when someone denies to pay the extortion money or reports it to the police. The devil incarnate appears with bloody consequences.
Is there anyone in the government to take control of the matter and oversee the security of a large number of citizens of the capital living in this area?
Mirpur could be taken as a test site by the law enforcement agencies where all the bad combination of crimes are present. They can make it an example for other areas, by reducing the crime levels drastically using inside information of criminals, learning about their operational methods, disregarding any political links, if any, and most of all taking a "zero tolerance" stance against the gangs which operate there, thus protecting the citizens who live under constant threats.
