River eroded people ransack Gaibandha water board office

GAIBANDHA, Apr 21 (UNB) : Thousands of agitated Jamuna river eroded victims Thursday ransacked Gaibandha Water Development Board office to press for implementing Saghata Upazila Protection Project. The agitated people also enforced a half-day hartal in Saghata Upazila today in support of their demand. Police and witnesses said more than thousand people who lost their homes in Jamuna river erosion in Saghata Upazila marched to the district head quarter at about 11am. They gheraoed the office of the district Water Development Board and at one stage they grew angry and ransacked the office when they did not find any official including the Executive Engineer in the office. A clash between police and the demonstrators broke out when police tried to disperse them. The protestors hurled brick bats at police leaving at least 11 people including Police Sub Inspector Yeazdani injured. Later, the protesters held a rally at Gaibandha School ground and formed human chain demanding protection of Saghata Upazila from the erosion of the Jamuna River.
