River erosion renders hundred of families homeless

BARISAL, August 18 (UNB): Erosion by a number of rivers in Barisal and Pirojpur districts has taken a serious turn, rendering hundreds of families homeless in last two weeks until Sunday.
The rivers-Kirtonkhola, Sandhya, Sugandhya, Arial Khan and Meghna-devoured a number of establishments during the period, according to the Water Development Board (WDB) and public representatives.
Local sources said more than 75 families lost their dwelling houses due to erosion by the river Sugandhya in Khudrakati and Rajguru villages in Babuganj Upazila of Barisal.
The river Sandhya and river Arial Khan also devoured a vast tract of land in Chandpasha, Dehergati, Rahamatpur, Baherchar and Agorpur unions of the district.
Important establishments and structures like Doarika Bridge, Abul Kalam College, Bir Shrestho Mohiuddin Jahangir Museum, Char Shadhukati Madrasa are also under threat.
Besides, communication on Uzirpur-Shatla-Harta road and on Dhaka-Barisal-Banaripara-Swarupkathi highway is disrupted very often because of the erosion by the river Sandhya, said Abul Kalam Azad, an upazila chairman of Uzirpur.
Vast lands in Uzirpur Upazila in Barisal and Nazirpur and Kawkhali upazilas in Pirojpur district disappeared into the river in last two weeks, he added.
