Riverbank protection work begins in Gaibandha finally

GAIBANDHA, Apr 23 (BSS): Much awaited riverbank protection work has begun at Saghata Bazaar area under Saghata Upazila in the district Friday amid much enthusiasm and satisfaction to the local people. Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) is implementing the work under a project involving Tk 20 crore to save the Bazar and its adjoining areas of the Upazila from the erosion of the river Jamuna, official said. The work will be done in other vulnerable points of the Upazila in phases after getting fund which is in pipeline, the sources said. It may be mentioned here that the river erosion affected and threatened people living on the bank of the river staged demonstration through holding human chain, observing strike and seizing BWDB office demanding the quick start of the work for few days last. With the starting of the work, the people of the areas benefited by relief goods and they thanked the government including local lawmaker Advocate Fazley Rabbi Miah and the concerned officials. Talking to the news agency executive engineer of BWDB here Mir Mosharraf Hossain said the work would continue till December 2013.
